Former UFC star Conor McGregor is among 21 candidates who have contacted Roscommon County Council in their bid to secure a nomination to contest the presidential election on October 24th.

A special meeting on Monday morning in the council chamber has been convened to allow candidates the opportunity to make a five minute presidential pitch to councillors.

Elected members will then decide whether they should nominate one of these independent presidential hopefuls.

The list of 21 candidates who have contacted the local authority also include businessmen Nick Delehanty and Gareth Sheridan who have built a notable profile in their bid to get on the ballot paper.

The list of confirmed attendees will be made known at the start of the meeting.

Prospective contenders seeking to become a candidate in the presidential election must secure nominations from four local authorities or 20 Oireachtas members.

Voters will go go to the polls on Friday, October 24th to decide who will succeed Michael D. Higgins.
