Memorial statue of Roscommon football legend gets planning approval

Planning permission has been approved for a memorial statue of double All-Ireland winning football captain Jimmy Murray to be erected in his native Knockcroghery.
Roscommon County Council has granted planning permission to the Jimmy Murray Memorial committee for a honed limestone statue of the football legend in the centre of the village.
The plans also include new access footpaths at the statue to be located at Knockcroghery townland in the village.
The monument is carved out of Roscommon limestone donated by Lecarrow Quarries, and local stonemason Mark Feeley was commissioned to undertake the project.
Jimmy, or ‘Jamesie’, as he was known to many, captained Roscommon to historic All-Ireland SFC titles in 1943 and 1944, the only Roscommon man to do so.
The acclaimed GAA figure passed away in 2007, in his 90th year.
