Minister approves Distinguished Service Medal with Honours for Private Billy Kedian

A Ballyhaunis soldier killed when his UN peacekeeping post was shelled in south Lebanon is to be  posthumously awarded a Distinguished Service Medal.

Private William Kedian from Ballyhaunis died at UNP 6-42 during fighting between Lebanese and Israeli backed factions on May 31st, 1999.

Reports from eye witnesses said that the shelling happened at 5.04 a.m. – he ran to the various locations where his team were and got them to safety.

Private Kedian (21) made sure 11 of his colleagues successfully got into the safety of bunkers. As he made sure his comrades were safe he was killed by shrapnel from an 81mm mortar round in a direct hit on the compound.

Two other soldiers, Private Ronnie Rush and Darren Clarke were also injured. Rush suffered serious injuries but survived the incident, while Clarke was less seriously injured.

The Distinguished Service Medal is awarded to members of the Defence Forces in recognition of acts of exceptional bravery and service. It is one of the highest awards that can be conferred upon an individual for extraordinary conduct in the performance of their duties.

“The decision to bestow this honour follows years of campaign. It is with immense pride that we see Private Kedian’s extraordinary courage finally recognised by the Defence Forces. His actions reflect the highest standards of bravery and duty, and this award serves to celebrate his immense contribution to the Irish Defence Forces,” said a spokesperson for the Private Billy Kedian Memorial Committee.

 “We would also like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to former TD Cathal Berry and Senator Gerard Craughwell, whose unwavering support and dedication were instrumental in securing this recognition. Their tireless efforts, including facilitating meetings with government ministers and the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, allowed us to effectively present our case and advocate for Private Kedian. Their work has been pivotal in ensuring that this well-deserved honour is now being conferred upon him.” 

Minister Michael Martin TD stated the following in his citation: “United Nations interim force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for displaying courage and bravery and leadership on the 31 May, 1999 private Kedian despite great personal risk and while his post was under fire alerted fellow peacekeepers to the dangers situation and directed him to a place of safety. His selfishness actions and devotion to duty placed him in danger and resulted in his death. 

"His courage exemplifies the highest ideals of military service, and we are proud to honour him for his selflessness and commitment.” 

The award ceremony will take place shortly, where Private Kedian’s sisters will receive the award in recognition of their brother’s extraordinary act of bravery.
