New traffic lights and pedestrian crossings proposed for Castlerea town 

A traffic safety scheme in Castlerea town, incorporating traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, has been unveiled by Roscommon County Council.

The Part 8 development, which has opened for public consultation, will involve the creation of two traffic light controlled (signalised) junctions at the Main Street/Patrick Street junction, and the Main Street/R361 junction.

The plans also propose the provision of two new controlled pedestrian crossings on Main Street with existing pedestrian crossings to be upgraded on this street and on Patrick Street.

Other elements of the project include footpath improvements, pavement works, provision of traffic signs, road markings, kerbs, street lighting and site clearance works.

The safety project is a part 8 development involving a formal application by the council, a public consultation process, a Chief Executive’s report and a final approval by local councillors.

There were concerns raised by some councillors at the July meeting of Roscommon Municipal District that traffic light proposals as presented to them in February could affect businesses due to a reduction in parking.

Last week, the council opened public consultation on the proposed traffic safety scheme for Castlerea.

Submissions marked “Castlerea Traffic Safety Scheme” can be made in writing or via email before January 9th, 2024, and submitted to the local authority’s Roads and Transportation Department or roads@roscommoncoco.ie.
