A public meeting is to take place to discuss the extensive damage to forestry, bogland and a special area of conservation in West Roscommon caused by Sunday's unprecedented wildfires.
Organised by Gorthaganny Community Development, the public meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 3rd in the Marian Hall, Gorthaganny, at 8 p.m..
Seamus Crawley, chairperson of Gorthaganny Community Development explained the meeting is in response to the recent extensive wildfires in Gorthaganny and surrounding villages.
"Public representatives and representatives of relevant government agencies are invited to attend.
"A plan for the aftermath of the extensive damage to the area will be for discussion. All are welcome to join and encouraged to attend," he said.
One prominent issue expected be highlighted at the meeting is the devastation caused to a special area of conservation (SAC) comprising unique flora and fauna.
The fire's destructive impact on the area’s rich biodiversity has been seismic and there are hopes that the SAC, which also locates an historic bogwalk, can be restored with Government assistance.
It’s estimated that the raging wildfires burnt a total of 1,300 acres of bog and forestry, twenty per cent of which is estimated to be forestry plantation.
