Revealed: the top five boys’ and girls’ names in 2023

There were 54,373 births registered in Ireland last year.

The top five boys’ and girls’ names for 2023 have been revealed by the CSO.

Once again, Jack was the top boys’ name, while Grace was the number one girls’ name.

The top five boys’ names (in order) were: Jack, Noah, James, Rian, Oisín.

Jack has been the most popular name for baby boys for the last seven years. Indeed Jack has been the top boys’ name since 2007, bar 2016 when James was number one.

Jack and James have been in the top five boys’ names for 25 years (since 1998). Last year was the first time that Oisín made it to the top five names.

The top five girls’ names in order were: Grace, Fiadh, Emily, Sophie and Lily.

Grace, Emily and Fiadh have been swapping bronze, silver and gold since 2019. These names have been consistently in the top three since then, with Grace the first or second choice for girls’ names since 2018.

In 2023, there were 54,373 births registered last year, which is a fall of 5.5 per cent in comparison with registrations in 2022.

Of those births, there were 561 babies born called Jack, while there were 339 newborn baby girls called Grace.

Caelan, Jude, Paddy, Éanna and Dáithí are the five new entrants into the top 100 boys’ names for 2023. Lucia, Cadhla and Síofra, were the new entrants to the top 100 girls’ names for 2023.
