Jamesie Murray, who passed away in 2007 in his 90th year, captained Roscommon’s All Ireland winning teams in 1943 and 1944.

A section of Knockcroghery village will be closed on Sunday, December 1st, to facilitate the unveiling of the Jimmy Murray memorial statue by GAA President, Jarlath Burns.

Roscommon County Council will close the following section of road on that Sunday: the L1827 Knockcroghery from the junction with L7134 at Churchboro Cross to the junction with the N61 beside Fair Green in the village.

The weekend of celebration to honour one of Roscommon’s most famous sons will take place on both Saturday and Sunday, November 30th and December 1st, in his native village.

The centrepiece of the weekend will be the statue unveiling on Sunday afternoon, December 1st, by the GAA President.

Representatives from the 32 clubs in Roscommon will be led by the famous Artane Band which will parade to the Village Green in advance of the unveiling ceremony.

The weekend will be full of song, reflection and celebration to honour the football legend who captained Roscommon to All-Ireland senior titles in 1943 and 1944.

It will be a special occasion for all Roscommon GAA supporters, the families of the 1943 and 1944 players as well as Knockcroghery parish residents who remember ‘Jamesie’ so fondly.
