A County Roscommon egg producer is encouraging the public to fall in love with eggs on World Egg Day.
Today, Friday, October 11th is World Egg Day and Bord Bia is reminding consumers that eggs are a kitchen ingredient staple and the starting point for a variety of easy, protein-rich meals.
From Tullyleague in Carrick-on-Shannon, County Roscommon, Ray Gannon of Gannon’s Eggs & Poultry is a Bord Bia Quality Assured egg packer and member of the Irish Egg Association. Gannon’s Eggs & Poultry is a fourth-generation family business located near the banks of the River Shannon that will celebrate 150 years in business next year. Founded by Ray’s great-grandfather Michael in 1875, Ray joined his father in the family business immediately after completing his Leaving Certificate in 1982, which he has been in ever since.
Even though Ray’s own business has been greatly strengthened by having the Bord Bia Quality Mark on his eggs, Ray would like to see more peers participate in the scheme. Ray commented: “More people need to know about it. We are one of the smallest producers but we find it invaluable when we go out to the market place and are able to give our customers the extra assurance that our eggs are produced to the highest standards."
He continued: “My hope is that by drawing attention to this campaign to promote World Egg Day that more people will realise how quick and easy it is to cook eggs."

To celebrate World Egg Day this year, Bord Bia has teamed up with Olympic track and field finalist and Irish record holder Sophie Becker and Olympic bronze medallist rower Philip Doyle, to encourage Irish consumers to ‘Crack On’ in the kitchen with Bord Bia Quality Assured eggs. Sophie and Philip regularly eat eggs to fuel their sports performance and have come together with Bord Bia to showcase just how versatile and nutritious eggs can be for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
