The road remains closed following the fatal accident.

A section of the N5 near Strokestown remains closed this morning, Wednesday, following a fatal road traffic accident.

An elderly woman died following a collision involving a SUV and a truck at Scramogue shortly after 5 p.m.. yesterday evening.

A passenger in the SUV, a female in her 80s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her body was removed to the morgue where a post-mortem examination will be arranged.

The driver of the SUV, a female in her 70s, was transferred by air ambulance to University Hospital Galway for treatment of serious injuries.

The road remains closed for examination by Garda forensic collision investigators. Local diversions are in place.

A Garda spokesperson has advised that traffic travelling eastbound from Strokestown or westbound from Longford town is encouraged to take the N63 via Roscommon town and Lanesborough.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 4.45 p.m. and 5.15 p.m. are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
