Transport Minister officially opens Frenchpark bypass

The Frenchpark bypass is part of 34km of new road being built between the Ballaghaderreen bypass and Scramogue.

Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien has today (Thursday) officially opened the Frenchpark bypass, comprising a 7km section of the new N5 road.

This section, bypassing Frenchpark village and Sheepwalk, is predicted to remove up to 70% of through traffic from the village.

The Frenchpark bypass is part of 34km of new road being built between the Ballaghaderreen bypass and Scramogue.

When complete, the new N5 road will also bypass Ballinagare, Tulsk and Strokestown.

It will replace 35km of existing N5 which is deficient in terms of alignment, safety and cross-section. The new road will improve safety and journey times on this national primary route.

The Frenchpark bypass officially opened to traffic today, nineteen months ahead of the contract completion date.

The 7km route commences in the townland of Rathkeery, bypasses the village of Frenchpark south of the existing N5, crosses the R361 regional road (Boyle to Williamstown) and rejoins the existing N5 in the townland of Cashel.
