A timely reminder that good things are happening all the time.

The world is full of bad news.

It can certainly seem like that.

Demoralising and non stop, it can seem like an never ending tide of examples of man’s inhumanity to man. While absolutely essential that it is reported on, it can leave us with a very bleak version of the world.

But there are always people working for the benefit of others and their community.

It was fantastic to see fate smiling on the Roscommon Agricultural Show on Saturday with the weather co-operating. It is only right given the amount of time and effort local volunteers put in to organising the much loved and long standing event. It was fantastic to see children and young people attend the event and huge credit must go to the organisers for providing entertainment and free entry to children under 12.

In recent days, we were delighted to see local volunteers rescue animals in trouble. On Sunday, the members of the Athlone Sub Aqua Club were called upon to save a dog from the waters of Lough Ree.

While on a cruiser bound from Lecarrow to Athlone, a Jack Russell called Max, fell into the water. Fortunately he was wearing a life jacket and was found safe and well.

"We are thrilled to have been able to reunite Max with his family," said club chairperson Janet Mullen. "This incident underscores the critical importance of wearing lifejackets, not only for people but for our pets as well, when out on the water."

Similarly, last week after a storm, a collie was found miles from home after being terrified by the thunder. Fortunately he was found and brought to the Leitrim Animal Welfare charity.

“Astonishingly, this brave collie had travelled over 33km from Boyle, County Roscommon to Tarmon, County Leitrim since Sunday. Thanks to his microchip, he is now safe and will be happily reunited with his family,” the charity said, and it highlighted that microchipping your pet is crucial.

These events and actions are a timely reminder that good things are happening all the time. As we head into the autumn and winter, it is important to remember this.
