A spring/summer outdoor recreation campaign, titled “Breathe in Roscommon” has been launched by Roscommon County Council.

This is a novel campaign and one that we should all support. It centres around a celebration of the county’s natural beauty, historic landscapes, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands.

While the campaign may be aimed primarily at visitors, it’s time we all took stock of what’s on our own doorstep.

We are told that this is more than just a campaign, “it’s an open invitation to slow down, lace up your boots, hop on your bike, and immerse yourself in Roscommon’s wide-open skies, tranquil lakes, scenic trails, and vibrant festivals”.

Supporting our local visitor attractions is vital for preserving community identity, boosting the economy, and promoting sustainable tourism.

The various places of interest in County Roscommon tell the unique story of our area. They showcase local heritage, traditions, and creativity, helping to keep those stories alive for future generations. By visiting and supporting them, we’re investing in the cultural and historical richness that makes our communities special.

From an economic perspective, local attractions create jobs, both directly and indirectly. They employ local staff and work with nearby suppliers. By shouting from the rooftops what we have to offer and by fully believing ourselves that this county can become a destination rather than just a stop off point, the county can attract visitors who spend money in our restaurants, shops, and hotels.

Every ticket purchased helps keep these attractions running, especially smaller ones and they rely heavily on local support to survive. In turn, this strengthens the local economy and helps small businesses thrive.

By choosing to explore what’s close to home, we can reveal hidden gems we never knew existed.

This spring summer why not engage more deeply with where we live, appreciate its value, and share that pride with others.

Supporting our local visitor attractions is about valuing our community—its past, present, and future. It’s an easy and impactful way to contribute to local well-being while enjoying enriching experiences right on our doorstep.
