AIB Connacht LGFA Intermediate Final

The double-score winning margin was hugely flattering to the winners in a game that was extremely competitive throughout, but St. Barry’s couldn’t match Caltra Cuans’ ruthlessness in front of goal at Kiltoom on Saturday afternoon, and so the Tarmonbarry-based club fell short of winning Connacht silverware at the first time of asking.

St. Barry’s could easily have had three green flags in the first 20 minutes but when Emma Reaney pounced on a misplaced short kickout to fire in the game’s first goal, that made it 1-3 to 0-3 to a Galway side that had really struggled to contain the powerful driving runs of Edel Beirne, Shannon McGuinness and Orlaigh Tighe in the early stages.

St. Barry’s also struggled to find the target with an array of scorable frees, and they trailed by 1-6 to 0-5 at half-time thanks to two excellent points from Caltra’s Saoirse Murray.

Ger Evans’ side regrouped well at half-time but they continued to struggle to convert good attacking possession into scores and were left with a mountain to climb when Ciara Murray rolled in a second Caltra goal.

The gap was reduced to four points, but a couple of contentious potential penalty calls didn’t go St. Barry’s way and they conceded a third goal at the end to Murray when they were stretched out trying to chase the game.
