Curtain comes down on successful Community Games season

The Roscommon/Kilteevan U-11 chess team, with National President Gerry McGuinness, that won silver medals at the national finals of Community Games in Carlow.

The curtain came down on the 2023 Community Games season in glorious weather conditions when the national finals of the arts and cultural festival took place in Carlow.

It was a very busy weekend with up on 2,000 children from all corners of the country attending the finals in team events such as chess, draughts, quiz, skittles, projects, choir, group music, group singing, group dance, and comedy, alongside individual events in handwriting, art, model making, recitation, singing, dance, music and gymnastics.

Outside of competition time, the children were entertained by stilt walkers, facepainters, live music, art workshops, giant jenga, Brown Bag Film modelmaking workshop and lots more. The youth committee deserves to be complimented on the running of the Fun Arts and Crafts Zone over the weekend.

A big thank you to the amazing volunteers and the team at VISUAL Carlow, St. Patrick’s College, and St. Leo’s College for all their support over the weekend.

The Roscommon Executive Committee would like to thank the managers and coaches from the various areas for preparing their competitors for the weekend. It was a long summer for the children in preparation for the national finals considering many of them had won their county finals as far back as May.

Roscommon was well represented in both the team and individual events. It was a very successful weekend. A total of 96 medals were presented to 11 teams and nine individuals from ten areas. It was the county’s best result in many years at the cultural finals.

Even though no gold medals were won, it was a great achievement to take home 56 silver, 13 bronze and 27 fourth place medals.

Silver medals were won in chess, draughts, choir, projects, gymnastics, art, model-making and handwriting. Bronze medals were won in skittles, art and solo dance, with fourth place medals in choir, project, and skittles.

It was great to see both Kiltullagh and Tulsk areas represented at the national finals. Both areas were newly reformed in 2023. Kitullagh won a silver medal in the U-12 girls handwriting event.

As the national finals brings an end to all competitions within Community Games for 2023, Roscommon Community Games would like to express its thanks to the children from all the areas that participated — you may not have been a medal winner, but the important thing is that you participated in your chosen events.

A big thank you goes to all the area secretaries and their committees for their dedication in keeping their areas afloat in difficult situations. Appreciation is also expressed to the managers, coaches and parents for preparing the children in their events and getting them to trainings and competitions.

Well done to all the county committee volunteers that did trojan work throughout the year in setting out timetables, booking and preparing venues, seeking referees and adjudicators, co-ordinating events, co-ordinating medals and trophies and singlets. Thanks to the county managers that took charge of events at county, regional and national finals.

The county executive acknowledges his dedication to the organisation.
