Double gold for Castlerea boxers

Castlerea Boxing Club can celebrate two national gold medals after the O’Rourke sisters – Aoife and Lisa – won their respective finals at the National Elite Championships.

Lisa O’Rourke secured gold in the women’s 70KG division as she produced a dominant display to overcome Tiffany O’Reilly (Portlaoise/Defence Forces). The Castlerea boxer won by unanimous decision with all five judges scoring the contest in her favour.

The inter county ladies footballer secured an European U-23 gold medal last month as she now aims to build up a strong run of form after past injuries.

Two time Olympian Aoife marked her return to the ring with a dominant final display. The Castlerea boxer proved too strong for Bethany Doocey (Castlebar) to win gold in the 75kg weight class.

Aoife claimed a unanimous decision victory as she defended the national title she won last year.

Meanwhile, two time Olympian, Michaela Walsh, has made history. She won her twelfth Elite title, becoming the only boxer in Ireland ever to do so, overtaking Kellie Harrington, who holds 11.
