Roscommon manager Davy Burke has stated that he is not a fan of frees from 40m out or further being worth two points.
He told RTÉ Sport that he believes the new rules have enhanced the game but feels that a free from outside the 40m arc being worth two points is not necessary.
“I’m very positive on them (the new rules) to be honest with you. I do think we are on the road to a really good product, a really exciting produce which I do think was the aim of the FRC so I would be very positive on them in general.
“I would change the two point for the free or any dead ball shouldn’t have a two point option to be honest with you. I think these guys are too highly skilled and it’s just a tap over to be honest with you so I think that really needs to go,” Burke noted.
The Kildare native also asserted that the rule in relation to the number of players a team must keep in the opposition half when seeing a player red or black carded also needed to be reviewed.
“It is the opposition that is getting punished really for a black card or a red card. They are going to look at that. Is it that you defend with 10 lads back instead of 11 for 10 minutes or can the keeper join in or can a player go up? Can one of the three (back) go up?
“I am not sure what the answer is, but I do think it is something that needs to be looked at. If we get a black card, it is the opposition that gets punished,” the Roscommon manager noted.
Burke enjoys goalkeepers being allowed to roam forward while he feels a goalkeeper needing to take a kickout within 20 seconds is too quick a turnaround.
“There is a little bit too much guessing going on at the minute between the 20 seconds for frees, the 20 seconds for kickouts and refs bringing it up 50 metres and it could be 60, 70, 80 metres.
“There are lads being pulled after 15 seconds on kickouts. We don’t need all this rush. There’s set plays, there are tactics and guys need a breather. I really would be concerned by the demands placed on players and the lack of breathers being provided during the games,” he stated.
