Two County Roscommon natives have played a major role in helping a Sligo club reach its first senior football championship final in 31 years.

Shamrock Gaels’ 2-15 to 1-14 victory against St. Mary’s in Keash last weekend means that they’ll be appearing in their first senior decider since 1994 when they meet reigning Sligo and Connacht club champions, Coolera/Strandhill, on Sunday, October 12th.

They last won the title in 1992 when they defeated St. Patrick's, Dromard, 2-11 to 0-8, in the final.

The team, who were crowned Sligo Division One League champions earlier this year, are managed by former Eastern Harps player, Shane King — a native of Drumdoe, Corrigeenroe in North Roscommon.

King, who played some underage football with St. Michael’s before moving to Eastern Harps, captained the South Sligo outfit to Sligo senior football championship glory in 2010.

During his primary school days, he won a County Roscommon Cumann na mBunscol title with St. Teresa’s NS, Corrigeenroe, on a team that featured Kieran McKeon — father of current Roscommon senior footballer, Cian McKeon.

Former St. Ronan’s player and County Roscommon referee, Patrick McTiernan, is also part of the management team.
