Former Roscommon senior football boss, Anthony Cunningham, will return for a second spell as St. Brigid’s senior football manager, the club has confirmed this morning.

Cunningham, who guided the club to its first Connacht club title in 2006, takes over from Jerome Stack who had been at the helm for the last two years, culminating in last Sunday’s narrow defeat against Glen in the All-Ireland club senior football final in Croke Park.

Eoin Mooney, James Martin and Niall Kelly will join Cunningham on his management team.

Following his first stint in charge of St. Brigid’s between 2006 and 2008, Cunningham went on to manage Garrycastle and led the Athlone-based club to the All-Ireland final of 2012 after getting the better of St. Brigid’s in the semi-final — a decider they lost to Crossmaglen Rangers following a replay.

He also took charge of the Galway U-21 and senior hurlers for a spell, managing the latter between 2011 and 2015.

He was in charge of the Roscommon senior footballers between 2019 and 2022, leading the Rossies to provincial glory five years ago, before moving to Portarlington in Laois in 2023.

His son John was part of this year’s St. Brigid’s panel and kicked a number of crucial scores during the team’s march to Croke Park.

In a statement, the club said that it was delighted to appoint Cunningham as manager and wished the management every success for the year ahead.
