St. Dominic’s were the story of the second round of the Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship as a Naos Connaughton hat trick of goals helped them defeat Pádraig Pearses 6-17 to 2-12.

The margin of defeat was harsh on Pádraig Pearses with St. Dominic’s grabbing a late 2-3 without reply but there was no doubting Dominic’s dominance as Connaughton proved a menace on the edge of the square. Two goals from Connaughton helped St. Dominic’s lead 2-7 to 1-4 at the interval despite a Thomas Sweeney major for the Woodmount based side.

A Sean Canning goal saw Pearses trail by just four points after 48 minutes after Mickey Joe Egan had netted earlier in the second half. However, St. Dominic’s were not to be denied as fourth quarter goals from Colm Lyons, Jack Lohan and Connaughton saw St. Dominic’s secure their first win of the Championship.

Four Roads also nabbed maximum points as they defeated Tremane 2-20 to 1-13. After their draw with St. Dominic’s last weekend, the reigning county champions got off the mark against an extremely wasteful Tremane outfit.

It was a case of a dirty dozen from a Tremane perspective as they shot 12 wides in the first half alone. Four Roads did not set the world alight in the opening period but led 0-9 to 0-5 as they proved far more efficient in front of the posts.

The winners punished Tremane’s misses with goals by Jamie Kelly and Conor Mulry in a five minute spell at the start of the second half. Despite Kevin Brennan flicking to the net, Four Rosds were comfortable winners.

Athleague’s goals in both halves was the difference in Lisnamult as Roscommon Gaels will rue the 11 wides they hit in their 2-16 to 0-18 loss. The Gaels were unable to reel Athleague after they struck goals after 20 minutes through David Flaherty and in the last play of the game from Cian Murray.

Ben McGahon was consistent all day from frees, contributing six scores, with Brendan Quinn and Ryan Conlon keeping the home team in touch, accounting for 11 of their team’s points.
