There was no joy for the Roscommon representatives on the Marist College team as they were defeated 3-16 to 2-13 by Coláiste Mhuire in the Leinster Schools’ A football final.

Clann na nGael’s Diarmuid O’Higgins started at full back after missing his side’s semi final win as he enjoyed an entertaining duel with Coláiste Mhuire dangerman Will Scahill, who finished with 1-2.

Will’s father, David Scahill, is a former Castlerea St. Kevin’s footballer and has been part of the Roscommon Masters football team in recent years.

Tadhg Fallon — younger brother of Roscommon defender Ruaidhrí — and Seán McDonnell (St. Brigid’s) made up an all Roscommon full back line. Clann na nGael clubman Zac Mullally started in goal and produced two important stops including an exceptional save to deny Scahill.

John Timlin (Clann na nGael) and Andrew Cotton (St. Dominic’s) both came off the bench for Marist College while Donal Dawson, a native of Knockcroghery started in midfield.

Marist College led 1-4 to 0-6 at half time despite conceding the opening five points of the contest. James McHugh, who finished with 2-8 kicked a pair of majestic two-pointers before netting himself.

The Athlone side led 1-9 to 0-11 after 43 minutes but the game changed when Scahill netted in the 45th minute.

Coláiste Mhuire powered on from there as their dominance in midfield gave them the platform to prevail.

It was another notable success for the Mullingar based school and for St. Faithleach’s senior footballer Brian Murtagh, who was part of the Coláiste Mhuire management team that helped the school regain the Br. Bosco Cup.
