St. Dominic’s denied famous win as Athleague strike late

The opening round of the Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship saw St. Dominic's almost pull off a late upset.
A thrilling opening round of the Kepak sponsored Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship saw two draws and a one score win against today’s three contests.
St. Dominic’s almost produced one of their greatest victories but were forced to be content with a 4-8 to 0-20 draw against three in a row chasing Four Roads.
Naos Connaughton placed St. Dominic’s on the cusp of a famous scalp when he netted in the second minute of injury time to move his side a point to the good. However, Four Roads conjured up an equaliser when Cathal Dolan picked out Conor Morris to slot over.
Morris had a sighter for a late winner but his effort from an acute angle drifted wide as the 14 men of Four Roads escaped with a share of the spoils.
Meanwhile, Athleague pulled off a late Houdini act as they struck late to nab a 3-12 to 1-18 draw against Pádraig Pearses. Robbie Fallon buried a 65th minute goal to deny a Pearses side who showed they will have a far greater say in this year’s Championship than they did 12 months prior.
In a fiery affair, Pearses saw Eoin Canning brandished with a red card for an off the ball incident although the Woodmount based side will harbour huge regrets over not seeing this game out.
They led 1-13 to 0-6 after 42 minutes but goals by Cian Murray and Robbie Fallon gave them hope before the latter struck a dagger blow late on.
The opening game of this triple header saw Roscommon Gaels emerge 0-16 to 0-14 winners over Oran.
Brendan Quinn proved the hero as the Roscommon Gaels goalkeeper stepped up to nail two injury time frees to separate the sides. The teams were level on 11 separate occasions but Quinn showed his mettle to nail two pressure frees.
Oran were denied a goal after a Paddy Fallon shot was deemed to have travelled over the crossbar in the 58th minute. Quinn had flicked the sliotar back into play but after Cathal Kenny netted, the goal was ruled out and the point awarded. That point made it 0-14 each with Quinn subsequently coming up trumps down the stretch.
