A local hurling club has paid tribute to one of its stalwarts who passed away earlier this week.
Ballygar Hurling Club said that the late Paddy Flynn Snr, and his family, had been an integral part of the East Galway club since he settled in Tully Village with his beloved late wife Nonie in the early 70s.
In a heartwarming tribute on social media, Ballygar HC outlined how Paddy Snr. got involved with the club shortly afterwards with the encouragement of late John Carrig, a fellow Limerick man.
“Rumour has it that, on the advice of Paddy, John also signed up now club legend Frank Harkins on the same trip,” quipped the club.
Paddy Snr’s sons, Paddy and Willie, became stalwarts of Ballygar and numerous Roscommon hurling teams down through the years.
His grandson Michael won an All-Ireland minor hurling title with Galway in 2018. With Limerick winning the Liam MacCarthy Cup as well, Paddy Snr. was a proud man that evening.
Paddy was a selector with many Ballygar hurling teams. The club detailed that one of his proudest moments came on August 25th, 1985, when Ballygar won the Roscommon SHC for the first time in 55 years.
A former Club President, Ballygar said that he was a "proud hurling and GAA man", and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Predeceased by his wife Nonie (nee Carr), Paddy Flynn Snr. is survived by his children Paddy Jnr., Willie, Mary, Margaret, his grandson Michael, as well as all the extended Flynn and Carr families.
His Funeral Mass took took place in St. Patrick’s Church, Newbridge, on Thursday afternoon with burial afterwards in Killyan cemetery.
