Roscommon boxer Lisa O'Rourke has been narrowly beaten on a split decision in her World Boxing Championships quarter-final bout in Liverpool this evening, Tuesday.
In a very physical contest, the Tarmon native lost out in her 70kg bout against top seed Lekeisha Pergoliti of Australia, and denied the chance of at least a bronze medal.
Four of the five judges gave the 2022 World champion the nod after an impressive first round but Pergoliti found her rhythm in the second, winning it on a split call.
It was all down to what turned out to be a frenetic final round and the Aussie boxer just shaded it to win the contest on a 3-2 split decision.
All Roscommon eyes will now be on sister Aoife who is back in the ring on Wednesday in her 75kg quarter-final against Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad.
