Local school digs deep to secure All-Ireland soccer title
The Glenamaddy Community School team that won the FAI Schools Junior ‘B’ Girls National Cup Final (U-17, Small Schools).
A local school has added to its trophy haul by being crowned All-Ireland champions after winning the FAI Schools Junior ‘B’ Girls National Cup Final (U-17, Small Schools).
Glenamaddy Community School emerged 1-0 winners over Dublin’s Gaelcholáiste Reachrann, Domhnach Míde today (Wednesday) at Athlone Town stadium.
Ruby McGuire’s first time finish from just inside the box at the start of the second half helped Glenamaddy CS add to their trophy haul.
They won the FAI Schools Minor B Girls’ National Cup decider last year while they claimed the FAI Schools’ First Year B Girls National Cup title last October.
Meanwhile, the boys’ senior team claimed the Connacht title before losing the FAI Schools John Murphy Senior ‘B’ National Cup Semi Final (Under 19, Small Schools) to St. Peter’s Community School Passage West.
With John Kennedy and Gerry Davis at the helm, Glenamaddy Community School targeted a fast start. They almost enjoyed the perfect opening as Ali O’Toole was thwarted by Gaelcholáiste Reachrann, Domhnach Míde keeper Aibhilin Ni Laochdha.
Glenamaddy CS appeared the more menacing in the final third. Aibhilin Ni Laochdha denied O’Toole after the midfielder’s snapshot in the 22nd minute.
Neither side were able to carve out another strong chance in the first half, but Glenamaddy CS struck a felling blow less than five minutes into the final period.
In the 39th minute, Ruby McGuire broke onto possession on the right hand side of the box as her first time shot found the net.
Sub Michelle Mulryan’s first touch ended with the ball rebounding off the post as Glenamaddy CS almost doubled their lead. Gaelcholáiste Reachrann, Domhnach Míde captain Ciara Ni Mhuiri’s free kick was well saved by Katie Forde.
Glenamaddy CS came through a tense finale to add another title to their ever-growing collection.
