A young Roscommon teenager has secured a deadlifting world record.

Eoghan Darcy from Castlerea managed to deadlift 162.5kg, which is a record for a 14-year-old.

Darcy beat the previous record of 160kg, which was previously set in America back in December 2021.

The teenager used calibrated plates and an official deadlift bar. He saw his attempt witnessed by five-time Ireland’s Strongest Man winner, Pa O’Dwyer. His world record attempt was videoed and photographed by a professional sports videographer.

The Castlerea deadlifter states that O’Dwyer, who features Eoghan on his YouTube channel, is an inspiration.

The 14-year-old has always held a strong interest in fitness. When he stumbled across Strongman competitions on YouTube, a passion was formed.

He got his first bar and weights in December 2021 and began by training in the deadlift. Eoghan now owns a squat rack, a bench press, three bars, 250kg in weights, a rowing machine and a treadmill.

His aim is to lift 200kg before the end of the year and try to break the conventional deadlift world record for a 15-year-old.

He trains between home and FullBody Workhouse in Roscommon Town.
