Roscommon’s Rachel Curley has won gold at the AWPC World Powerlifting Championships.
The Championships saw the best powerlifters descend upon Limerick as Curley managed to defeat all challengers.
The Roscommon woman produced her best when needed most. She set a personal best in the deadlift with 142.5kg while she attempted a deadlift at 156kg to try set a new world record. Even though she was unsuccessful on this occasion, she had done more than enough to secure gold.
She claimed European gold in Finland earlier this year while this latest triumph highlights her ability to compete and beat the best on the world stage.
In a statement on social media, the Roscommon powerlifter stated: “2024 has been a whirlwind of a competition year for me. I would never have believed back in January that by August I would have two National titles; one full power and one single lift deadlift, a gold European medal and a gold World medal."
“None of this would be possible without the people behind the scenes. I cannot thank Martin O’Mahony enough for the coaching, guidance and words of encouragement. Your knowledge and passion for powerlifting is to be admired and you proved that yet again yesterday with your performance at the pro comp. Thank you Martin O’Mahony."
She also thanked her family and friends after her latest success.
“Thank you to my family, friends and PT’s for all of the support and encouragement. It never goes unnoticed.”
