A Carrick man was instrumental in helping the Irish U-20 rugby team produce a shock 31-21 victory over England on Friday night.
Diarmaid O’Connell packed down in the back row and played the full game as the Irish U-20 team produced one of the greatest performances seen by a national team at this age grade.
O’Connell was instrumental in Ireland stunning a previously unbeaten England team in front of over 13,000 people at the Rec in Bath.
The Irish number eight helped to prevent England from completing the Triple Crown after the home side had beaten Wales and Scotland in their opening two games.
Despite trailing 14-7 at half time, Ireland produced by far their best half of rugby in this year’s campaign after the interval as they have now secured successive wins following a chastening 50-21 defeat to France in their opening game.
Lee Fitzpatrick grabbed Ireland’s opening half try while Josh Neill and a Daniel Ryan brace ensured the visitors secured a bonus point win and in the process blew the competition wide open.
