Creggs overcome combined forces and the elements in war of attrition

The Creggs U-15 team played defeated Galwegians/Galway Bay in the second round of the league at The Green on Saturday afternoon.

The Creggs U-15 team played the combined Galwegians/Galway Bay outfit in the second round of the league at The Green on Saturday afternoon.

A strong wind made it hard to play expansive rugby. After being denied two certain tries early on, Conor Muldoon crossed the line in the tenth minute, which was followed by a Luke Hayes try five minutes later.

It seemed as if Creggs would take control of the game but a defensive lapse allowed the visitors in for a try, which was converted by their impressive full-back.

Just before half time, captain Cathal Mulry slipped a beautiful offload to Joseph McSharry to score under the posts in a carbon copy of last week’s try against Buccaneers. Harry Waldron added the conversion to leave the half-time score Creggs 17, Galwegians/Galway Bay 7.

The second half produced real defensive attrition. The wind kept Creggs pinned back in their own half and they conceded seven points after just two minutes. Some super tackling and turnovers from the pack kept the visitors out until the 15th minute when another seven points was conceded.

Now trailing by four points, Creggs needed to step up a level. A great team move ended up with Mulry slipping the ball to McSharry who crossed the whitewash. The try was converted by Waldron with ten minutes remaining.

In the final play, Creggs conceded a penalty and it looked like the game would finish level when their full-back lined up the kick. However he pulled his effort wide of the target, leaving the full-time score Creggs 24, Galwegians/Galway Bay 21.

The next game is in two weeks’ time away to Sligo. Training continues on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m..

MINI RUGBY RETURNS

Last Saturday saw big numbers return to mini rugby. The children were delighted to get the boots back on and play some rugby before watching Ireland beat South Africa in their World Cup match.

One again, Creggs numbers are growing. As a result, the management team require new coaches/helpers of all kinds to assist at training sessions.

If you are that parent, please contact one of the current coaches who will guide you towards Liz Payne — the mini rugby co-ordinator. With your help, be it cleaning, taking photos, making sandwiches, IT skills, parking etc it will help the club be able to continue with the mini rugby schedule.

TAG RUGBY

Creggs RFC was a hive of activity in glorious sunshine last Thursday morning for the Connacht Nations Series of tag rugby involving Fifth and Sixth Class boys and girls teams from primary schools in Counties Roscommon and Galway.

The day of rugby was organised by Connacht staff member Wendy Hickey and her colleagues with the support of Creggs RFC.

Creggs President, Dave Purcell, was in attendance along with Creggs Mini Rugby co-ordinator Liz Payne, Shane Fleming, Michael Glennon and Pat O'Gorman.

Creggs underage players and Transition Year students assisted with refereeing the matches. Over 500 students attended and each team played a number of games.

It was a huge success in the year of the Rugby World Cup. Each school were assigned the name of a World Cup rugby team and dressed accordingly.

Twenty schools were in attendance including Creggs, Mount Talbot, St Ciaran's, Athleague, Tisara, Ballyfeeney, Ballymurray, Ballyleague, Cloontuskert, Cloverhill, Glinsk, Lisaniskey, Feevagh, Williamstown, St. Coman's Wood, Kilcroan, Roxboro, Ballagh, Caltra and Ballygar.

LOTTO

The lotto jackpot was not won. It now stands at €10,000. The lucky dip winner last week was Lucy Glennon. Please enter for your chance to win. All monies raised by the lotto are used by teams at Creggs RFC.
