Castlerea Celtic were crowned Challenge Cup champions following a convincing 3-0 victory over Carrick Town.

It was a poignant moment for the club whose president James Kennedy passed away during the week.

Celtic got off to the dream start when after seven minutes Dara Curran was setup by Christopher Kelly to finish emphatically to the near post.

Eight minutes later Celtic doubled their lead through captain Jack Higgins following a long throw-in from Jarlath Geraghty.

The score remained 2-0 at half-time, with Carrick Town getting more of a foothold in the game in the second period.

Higgins and his centre-back partners James Egan and Dominic Bligh dealt with Carrick’s aerial game, with Carrick goalkeeper Oleh Troschii being kept busy at the other end.

In the last minute of normal time substitutes John Curran and Peter Farrell combined well for Farrell to find the net for his side’s third goal and seal victory.
