A fair sprinkling of young footballers from Roscommon will feature in this year’s Sigerson Cup, the premier gaelic football competition among Higher Education institutions.

St. Brigid’s Ben O’Carroll and Bobby Nugent along with Boyle siblings Daire and Oisin Cregg are part of the UCD squad. The Dublin college will be hoping to go one better than last year when they were beaten in the final by Ulster University.

Another St. Brigid’s player, Ruairdhí Fallon, is a member of the University of Galway squad while Luke Glennon (Boyle), Tomas Crean (Creggs) and Eoin Ward (Fuerty) are the Roscommon representatives on the DCU panel.

Caelim Keogh of Pádraig Pearses and Darragh Heneghan from Michael Glaveys are in the University of Limerick squad with two other Pádraig Pearses players, Declan Kenny and Daniel Farrell, set to line out for TUS Midlands.

Connacht U-20 player of the year Shane McGinley from Strokestown is on the ATU Galway panel while his club colleague Colm Neary is part of the TUD team.

Meanwhile, St. Michael’s player Sean Moran will feature for Sligo ATU, who face a tough opening round against title holders, Ulster University.

Round 1 and 2 of games get underway this week on January 7th and 8th, and the final will be hosted by the University of Galway in mid-February.
