ATHLEAGUE

CONGRATULATIONS: The club would like to congratulate club members Caoimhe Connaughton, Éabha Dowd and Anna Murray who were members of the Convent of Mercy team that won the Connacht Colleges’ senior rugby title last week. Congratulations also to Athleague Camogie Chairperson, Shirley Whyte, on her recent engagement to Padraig O’Malley. The club wishes them many years of health and happiness.

HARD LUCK: Hard luck to club players Aideen and Tara O’Brien, Rachel Fitzmaurice and Jane Horan who were on the county minor and junior camogie teams that were defeated by Limerick and Laois last weekend.

BON VOYAGE: The club wishes the best of luck to senior player Tara Naughton who has travelled to Cyprus as part of her studies for six months. Hopefully she will keep up her camogie training!

BOYLE

LOTTO: The jackpot wasn’t won in the recent draw. Edel Kavanagh matched three numbers. The jackpot stands at €7,900 for next Monday evening’s draw, which takes place at 9 p.m..

GAMES: The McGovern Civils sponsored senior men’s team were edged out St. Brigid’s in their O’Rourke Cup game in Kiltoom on Friday evening. The Cooney Motors sponsored junior team were beaten by Kilglass Gaels. The senior team are back in action next Saturday against Western Gaels in Frenchpark at 4.30 p.m.. The Well and M. Kerins sponsored senior ladies’ team continued their successful start to the league with a third win on the bounce, beating St. Dominic’s on a scoreline of 0-12 to 0-9.

CASTLEREA ST. KEVIN’S

MASTERS: Congratulations to Declan Woods who played for Ireland in the first Masters Over-50s Compromise Rules test against Australia last weekend. Ireland enter Saturday’s second test at Denn GFC in County Cavan with a good lead after defeating the Australians in Curry, County Sligo.

O’GARA CUP: Well done to the intermediate footballers who started their O’Gara Cup campaign with a victory over Strokestown B in Strokestown on Friday night. Next up is the visit of Kilmore to James Timothy Park on Saturday next at 4.30 p.m..

WELL DONE LILY: Congratulations to Lily Vickers who was a member of the ATU Sligo team that defeated Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, in the Moynihan Cup final in Cork last weekend.

DEVELOPMENT DRAW: The club launched a 300 club Development Draw last weekend. There will be 300 tickets priced at €100 with four draws in June, September, December and March. One-third of the income will be given out in prize money and two-thirds will be used towards capital works in the club. There will be six prizes in each draw, so buyers will have 12.5/1 chance of winning.

KILBRIDE

O’GARA CUP: Kilbride’s young intermediate footballers took to their home field against St. Croan’s in the O’Gara Cup last Friday evening. The visitors got off to a good start, going two goals to two points ahead after ten minutes. At half time, the scoreboard read 2-6 to 1-3 in favour of St. Croan’s. Kilbride came out strongly in the second half and battled hard until the end, but were defeated on a scoreline of 2-7 to 1-7.

NEW GYM: Planning permission has been successfully secured for the new gym. Thanks to AOL and Albert Looby. The building will be modular construction 20 metres x 9 metres, and will be located between the clubhouse and old dressing rooms. A deposit has been paid and date for fitting is the last week in May 2024. None of this would be possible without the huge effort put into making the recent 50K draw a success. Thanks to everyone who ran the event, helped with sales or bought tickets. This money will further update the club’s fantastic facilities for the young people of Kilbride.

LOTTO JACKPOT: The club’s lotto jackpot rolls over to the next draw on Saturday, March 23rd, where there will be €9,000 to be won. Annual tickets are still available and can be purchased from any committee member. The club’s online platform will return shortly.

O’GARA CUP: Well done to the intermediate football team who defeated St. Brigid’s B in the O’Gara Cup by 2-13 to 1-11 in Kiltoom on Saturday evening last. O’ROURKE CUP: Oran were narrowly defeated by St. Faithleach’s in their first O’Rourke Cup game of the season in Ballyleague on Saturday last. After a very close first half, Faithleach’s came out in the second half with all guns blazing and built up a five-point lead. However, Oran kept plugging away and ended up losing by a point. The club would like to wish Thomas Featherston a speedy recovery. On next Friday night at 8.30 p.m., Oran are away to Strokestown.

LGFA NEWS: The senior ladies took on Strokestown on Sunday morning last and recorded their second victory on the road. Down by a point at half time, the girls rallied in the second half to run out winners on a scoreline of 1-17 to 2-6. The U-16 girls also recorded a good win against St. Croan’s in Enfield on Sunday last. Well done to the players and management.

PÁDRAIG PEARSES

SCHOOLS’ BLITZ: Cumann Phádraig Mhic Phiarais GAA in conjunction with Glór na nGael and Roscommon County Board are organising a schools blitz on Wednesday, March 20th, in Páirc Phádraig Mhic Phiarais at 10.30 a.m.. The games will be played through the medium of Irish and six schools in the area are taking part. It is the first football blitz that the club is aware of in the county where emphasis will be placed on the use of the Irish language, so teachers and students are preparing hard to maximise their use of the language on the day. As children love to play in front of a crowd, it is hoped many parents will be in a position to come along to support them and the language. Refreshments will be served. This project is supported by Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha — a scheme supporting the use of the Irish language in clubs ran by Glór na nGael in partnership with the GAA. SEISIÚN FOR OLLIE: Johnny Johnston, in conjunction with monthly trad session group, are hosting a fundraising event in Pádraig Pearses clubhouse on Saturday, March 16th, to raise funds for "Ollie's Journey with MND". Ollie is Johnny's nephew and received the life-altering diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease last November. CONDOLENCES: Shannon Gaels GAA Club was very saddened to learn about the passing of Aidan Kelleher. The Shannon Gaels community wishes to extend its sincerest sympathy to the Kelleher family on Aidan’s passing. Aidan played senior football for Shannon Gaels and Roscommon. He was captain of the 1964 senior team that won the club’s only senior title. Aidan was well-known and highly respected within the club and wider community for his long career in running Kelleher’s Drapery Shop in Cortober alongside his involvement in the farming community. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. May he Rest In Peace.

TEAM OF THE YEAR: Four St. Brigid’s players — Brian Stack, Pearse Frost and Ruaidhrí Fallon and Ben O’Carroll — were picked on the Team of the Year at the AIB GAA Club Players Awards in Croke Park on Friday evening. They received their award from GAA President, Jarlath Burns. Ben O’Carroll was also one of three nominees for GAA AIB Club Footballer of the Year.

ONE GOOD CLUB: St. Brigid’s has been chosen as one of 22 GAA clubs in Ireland to take part in a Lidl and Jigsaw initiative called “One Good Club”. The programme will run for ten weeks, starting on March 18th. Every fortnight, a different theme of Jigsaw's “five a day for your mental health” is featured. It's aim is to raise awareness and improve understanding of mental health while empowering clubs to positively affect their members and community. DINNER DANCE: A huge thanks to everyone who supported the club’s dinner dance on Saturday night. A special thank you to the Hodson Bay Hotel who sponsored the dinner dance and put on a great show, and to Sandra Griselain and Maria Derwin who put in huge work organising it. Thanks to special guest Brian Carroll for his great words of encouragement. The presentation of medals to the U-20 county champions, senior county and Connacht champions, and All-Ireland finalists took place on the night, as well as the presentation of players of the year for ladies and men (senior, intermediate and junior).

ST. MICHAEL’S

O'GARA CUP: A young intermediate team made their return to the O’Gara Cup against an experienced Michael Glaveys side at Ardcarne Park on Saturday last. A couple of goals in as many minutes handed the visitors an eight-point lead at the interval. St. Michael’s started the second half with three points and also hit the post. But Glaveys pulled away to win by 2-10 to 0-6. Well done to Neil Fahy, Ruadhan Henry and Shane O'Dowd who made their adult debuts on Saturday. They can be very proud of their performances. Next up is a home game against St. Croan's on Saturday, March 16th, in Ardcarne Park at 4 p.m..

LGFA: Well done to the junior ladies’ footballers and management who continued their bright start to the season with a hard-fought 0-13 to 0-7 victory against St. Dominic's at Ardcarne Park on Sunday afternoon. The foundation was laid during an impressive opening 20 minutes when the home side rattled off six unanswered points from play from five different scorers. St. Michael’s/St. Ronan’s were 0-7 to 0-1 ahead at the interval. St. Dominic’s rallied, but a point from Clodagh Daly brought the match to a close. Congratulations to the U-16 girls’ footballers who secured a thrilling 2-7 to 1-8 victory against Boyle in Ballyfarnon on Sunday. Boyle started brightly and it took two good saves from Caoimhe Rynn to prevent her team from falling further behind. St. Michael’s/St. Ronan’s trailed by 0-5 to 0-4 at the break. Boyle stretched their advantage to five points in the third quarter, but two goals in as many minutes from Rachel Flynn and Kyra McTiernan turned the game on its head.

MEMBERSHIP: The club is holding a registration evening on Wednesday, March 13th, in the clubrooms at Ardcarne Park between 8.15 p.m. and 9.30 p.m..

ST. RONAN’S
