Class Act: Roscommon Community College

Pictured are Class 1C with their shoeboxes for the Team Hope appeal.
On November 8th, six students represented Roscommon Community College in the Gael Linn Irish debating competition, which took place in Roscommon Community College. This competition promotes the Irish language by giving students the opportunity to debate against other schools through the medium of Irish.
The junior Irish debating team, which consisted of three Second Year students, Tom Óg Reddington, Rebecca Trimble and Aideen Pearce, battled out against Meánscoil Muire Gan Smál Ros Comáin and Meánscoil na Trócaire, Ballymahon, in a very exciting debate in relation to reality television.
Congratulations to the junior debating team, whose excellence secured them a place in the next round of the competition! They will now progress onto the next round of the competition representing Roscommon Community College in the coming weeks.
The senior Irish debating team, which consisted of Fifth Year students Cian Escosio, Nathan Mac an Bháird and Conor Pearce faced tough competition against Meánscoil Muire Gan Smál Ros Comáin, Meánscoil na Trócaire Ballymahon and Scoil Mhuire Strokestown in an extremely high standard debate. Well done to all participants in the senior category, who displayed an excellent standard in what was a very enjoyable debate for all. Commiserations to the senior team who narrowly missed out on a spot in the next round of the competition.
Thank you to Gael Linn and School management for enabling this competition to take place in the school, Irish teachers Ms Muldowney and Ms Madden, and also a big thank you to student volunteers who helped out on the night.

Cheque Presentation to Mayo Roscommon Hospice
Roscommon Community College had the honour of presenting a cheque to Mayo Roscommon Hospice last week. This was a collective achievement stemming from a recent staff coffee morning and students’ bake sale, along with the memorable ‘Make the Cut’ event from last year. A big thank you to Patricia and Ms Keena for facilitating and organising these events. A special thanks to Martina Jennings, CEO of Mayo Roscommon Hospice, for not only accepting the cheque but also taking time to speak with the students about the invaluable work the hospice does. The school is also grateful to Mayo Roscommon Hospice for supporting the student’s enterprise McCompactors, by purchasing the innovative bin compactors.
Well done to both the First Year 1C and 1D classes for participating in the annual Team Hope Shoebox Appeal recently. Both classes took part in the Team Hope Shoebox Appeal as part of their CSPE classes. In CSPE students learn about various topics such as globalisation, poverty, and human rights and the annual Team Hope shoebox appeal was the perfect opportunity for students to become active citizens.
