Tisrara NS pupils travelled to Dublin to participate in the ALDI Play Rugby National Festival on Wednesday, April 17th in the Aviva Stadium. The pupils from Four Roads played in a tag rugby blitz hosted by Creggs RFC in March. Out of 77 schools in Connacht, only five schools were selected, and Tisrara NS was fortunate to be one of the five lucky schools. They played tag rugby against schools from across the country. They also enjoyed a tour of the home dressing room and saw the Six Nations Trophy. They met some Irish rugby ambassadors including James Ryan and Paul O’Connell, who signed autographs and posed for photographs with the children. Paul O’Connell even lined out for Tisrara NS in one of their games. Many thanks to Michael Glennon and Pat O’Gorman (CRDO’s) Creggs Rugby Club, ALDI and the IRFU for inviting us to such a special event. A wonderful day thoroughly enjoyed by the pupils, teachers, and parents from Tisrara NS.

Tony Whyte, Thomastown, Ballydangan, who passed on to his eternal reward on Friday, April 19th, at Portiuncula University Hospital, was one of South Roscommon's best known and most respected residents. Aged 85, he had been in ill health a short time and he bore his illness with characteristic resilience. The deceased was synonymous for a number of decades with the Clann na nGael and Roscommon GAA scene and the health care area in the midlands generally. Following a number of years on the work scene as a manager at the then Portiuncula Hospital, Tony and his late wife Teresa established private nursing homes at Retreat, Athlone, and Garbally View, Ballinasloe. They and their family very speedily established a new niche for themselves on the health care scene and the nursing homes have been operated in both towns with managerial expertise and care and concern for the welfare and well-being of patients and their respective families. Tony was noted for his mild mannered approachability and affability both on the work scene and GAA scene generally. He held the role of Chairperson of the County Roscommon Executive Committee of Pieta House in recent decades and he supported a wide range of charitable causes and bequests throughout his life. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and a most obliging neighbour. On the GAA scene he was synonymous with the Clann na nGael GAA Club and he served as its secretary and chairperson over the decades and was its President at the time of his death. He also served as a coach and manager to various teams since the sixties and people recognised him as the club historian and creator of the club museum at Johnstown. On the playing fields, he made his initial debut as a 16-year-old on the Clann 1955 senior side while still attending Garbally College, Ballinasloe and over the next 24 years he won six county senior championship titles with Clann and captained the teams in 1961, 1966 and 1970. He was the manager when Clann brought back the first Connacht Club Championship title to Johnstown in 1982 and the second title in 1984. He played with Roscommon in all grades in a playing career than ran from the late fifties to 1970. He was the left half-forward on the Roscommon team that went down to Kerry in the All Ireland final of 1962. In his role as trainer-manager of the Roscommon senior panel in the late seventies he guided them to Connacht titles in 1977 and 1978 and an All-Ireland final appearance in 1980. Back in 1984, he also penned the Clann na nGael GAA Club history which was then recognised for its all-round excellence. Predeceased by his wife, Teresa, and sons, Tony and Joe, he is survived by sons, Paul, Ollie and Mark and daughters, Marie, Sandra and Therese; sister, Mrs Ann Kennedy, Johnstown; grandchildren and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass at St Brigid's Church, Drum, on Monday, April 22nd, the burial took place in Drum Cemetery.

A member of an esteemed farming family in that locality, she was respected in her residential catchment for her capacity for hard work and her devotion to her family. A most obliging neighbour and reliable friend, she was noted for her hospitality to all those who visited her family home over the decades. A religious person, since taking up residence in America, Oldtown, she assisted the cleaning personnel at St Mary's Church, Moore, and supported a wide range of charitable causes and bequests. She was predeceased four years by her husband, Patrick, and is survived by sons, Liam, Falty; Blaise, America and daughter, Mrs Mary Kelly, Ballygar.
