Local Notes: Irish international gets married, bicentenary celebrations and remembrances

The marriage took place on Thursday, July 10th, at Killruddery House, County Wicklow of Jack Carty, son of Ted and Susan Carty, Barrymore, Kiltoom, and Sarah Twaddell, daughter of Stephen and Pauline Twaddell, Malahide, County Dublin. The bride was given away by her father. The ceremony was performed by registrar Ms Susan Delaney. The bestman was Ben Carty, brother of the groom, and the groomsmen were Luke Carty, also brother of the groom, and Joey Cunniffe, friend of the groom. The bridesmaids were Ms Helen Twaddell, sister of the bride, and Alix Gavard, friend of the bride. Juliette Shine, niece of the groom, was flower girl and the page-boy was Teddy Twaddell, cousin of the bride. The ring bearer was Ted Shine, nephew of the groom. The wedding reception was held at the same venue. The groom is a well-known Connacht rugby player and the bride is proprietor of Anekdote Design. The couple will reside in Galway.
A special healing retreat will take place at Our Lady Star of the Sea Prayer Centre, Curraghboy on Friday 1st and Saturday, August 2nd with Fr. John Keane. The retreat commences at 7.30 p.m. on Friday evening and on Saturday it will commence at 11 a.m and finish at 5 p.m. Confessions will be available on Friday evening at 7 p.m. and also Saturday morning. There will be Mass on both days followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Adoration. Fr. John will incorporate the Devotions for the First Saturdays into the retreat. Afterwards Fr. Very Rev. Michael McManus, PP, Kiltoom and Cam, will celebrate the annual open air Cemetery Mass in Kiltoom Cemetery on Saturday, August 9th, at 7 pm. The customary big attendance is anticipated.
There will be Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at St Brigid's Church, Curraghboy, on this Friday, August 1st, at 7 p.m..
Plans are now well advanced for the celebration of the bicentenary of St Patrick's Church, Dysart, on Sunday, August 24th next. The church was built in 1825. It is one of the oldest Catholic churches in the Diocese of Elphin. In recent months it has undergone renovation works. Dr Kevin Doran, Bishop of Elphin and Achonry, will be the principal celebrant of the concelebrated Mass in the church at 3 p.m. on August 24th. A 60 page illustrated publication tracing the history of the church from Patrician times will also be launched to coincide with the celebrations. Refreshments will be provided in the nearby Dysart Community Centre. Extensive renovations were previously carried out on St Patrick's Church, Dysart, in 1901 and 1956.
The death took place on Monday, July 7th, at her home of Ms Rosemary (Rosie) Whyte, Dolanstown, Ballydangan. Aged 48, she had been in ill health for some time and she bore her illness with characteristic dignity and fortitude. The deceased was a native of Clonburren, Oldtown, and she was held in high esteem by all those who made her acquaintance. Noted for her sense of neighbourliness in her residential catchment, she enjoyed friendships with a wide age range. She is survived by her children, Ruth and Leo; her parents, Mary and Denis, her twin brother, Denis, brother, John; sister, Katie; sisters-in-law Evonne and Sarah; brother-in-law, Roger; Ruth and Leo's father Patrick and his parents Aidan and Margaret McDonnell and the family Kieran, Kevin, Sonia and their partners, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection on Wednesday, July 9th, at St Mary's Church, Moore, the burial took place in Moore New Cemetery.

The marriage took place on Saturday, July 12th, at Derrane Church, between Hubert Darcy, son of Hubert and Mary Darcy, Tulrush, Creagh, and Eleanor Davis, daughter of Marty and Pauline Davis, Carrabane, Derrane, Roscommon. The bride was given away by her father. The ceremony with Nuptial Mass was performed by Very Rev. Eugene Mc Loughlin, retired PP, Roscommon and Athleague. The bestman was Padraig Downey, friend of the groom and the groomsmen were Lorcan Darcy and Fionnan Darcy, both brothers of the groom and Darren Connolly, friend of the groom. The maid of honour was Sarah Fitzmaurice, friend of the bride, and the bridesmaids were Emma McNamara, cousin of the bride; Jenny Connaughton-Silva, friend of the bride and Martha Blighe, also cousin of the bride. The lessons were read by Martin Davis and Thomas Davis, both brothers of the bride. Leo Fahy, cousin of the bride, was pageboy and the flower girl was Carla McNamara, also cousin of the bride. Hymns with musical accompaniment were rendered by Simon Casey. The reception was held at the Hodson Bay Hotel, Kiltoom, Athlone, and the honeymoon was spent in Italy. The groom is attached to the teaching staff of Athleague National School and the bride is a member of the teaching staff of Roosky National School. The couple will reside at Carrabane, Roscommon. The groom is a past member of the Roscommon senior panel and a long serving senior panellist with Padraig Pearse’s GAA Club.
Dr Kevin Doran, Bishop of Elphin and Achonry, will be the celebrant of the annual Mass of the Angels at Ss Peter and Paul, Athlone, on Wednesday, August 20th at 7.30 p.m.. Following the Mass a memorial will be unveiled and blessed in the church grounds to remember the little ones called home too soon.
Four senior sides from South Roscommon GAA Clubs will play the first round of the Roscommon GAA senior club championship on this Friday, August 1st. Clann na nGael will clash with St Dominic's at the Johnstown home venue at 8 pm. Padraig Pearses will meet St Faithleach's in Ballyleague at 7.30 pm. St Brigid's will take on Elphin in Elphin at 7.30 p.m.. Padraig Pearses took home their first senior title to their Woodmount base in 2019 by defeating Roscommon Gaels. In the 2021-22 championship season the first Connacht senior club championship came to the club by virtue of Pearses defeat of Knockmore of Mayo. Clann na Gael have the distinction of winning six Connacht senior club titles in the eighties. St Brigid's won the 2012-2013 All Ireland Senior Club Championship by virtue of their defeat of Ballymun Kickhams on St Patrick's Day 2013 in Croke Park. St Dominic's returned to the senior championship in 2022 when they defeated Eire Og in the intermediate football championship final.
The death took place on Wednesday, July 9th, at Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe, of Ms Maree McCann, Sycamore Drive, Roscommon Road, Kiltoom. Aged 83 on May 12th last, she was a native of Monksland and had resided in Sycamore Drive since the late seventies. She had been in ill health a short time and she bore her illness with characteristic resilience. The deceased worked as a sales representative for baking products for James Daly, Cork and latterly Cloverhill, Millstreet, and she was deservedly popular with her customers and work colleagues. Of an affable and friendly disposition, she performed innumerable neighbourly deeds and kind acts in the course of her life with typical self-effacement. She had a lifelong fondness for dogs and cats and she enjoyed reading and gardening as her main hobbies. Predeceased nine years by her brother, Sean, Monksland; she is survived by three nieces, Mrs Maureen Garrett, London; Michelle, London; Clodagh, Monksland, sister-in-law, Mrs Mary McCann, Monksland; and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at the Church of the Risen Christ, Ballybay, Kiltoom, on Saturday, July 12th, the burial took place in Kiltoom Cemetery. The celebrant of the Mass was Very Rev. Michael McManus, PP, Kiltoom and Cam. He was assisted by Deacon William Gacquin, Curraghboy.
