The Palace Neighbourwood Park and sensory garden, Elphin was officially opened earlier today by Cathaoirleach Liam Callaghan.

After seven years of hard work by the Elphin Area Community Enterprise committee, the park, which is across from the windmill, has been converted into a beautiful natural space, with more than 5,000 native Irish trees, ponds and aquatic features – all of which are wheelchair accessible.

The Elphin community, along with volunteers who helped develop the park and local representatives attended the official opening which was held as part of National Heritage Week.

A plaque detailing the native Irish trees planted in the park was also unveiled by Cllr Valerie Byrne and Roscommon County Council CEO Shane Tiernan. Parish priest Fr Stephen Ezenwegbu blessed the park as part of the opening.

*Full coverage and pictures from the official opening will be featured in next week's edition of the Roscommon Herald
