Free admission for visitors under 18 to Roscommon heritage sites
Boyle Abbey was the first successful Cistercian Abbey in Connacht, founded in 1161, the monastery became a famous centre of learning for more than 400 years.
The Office of Public Works (OPW) has announced that admission to heritage sites across the country, including Boyle Cistercian Abbey and Roscommon Castle, will be free for all visitors under 18 throughout August.
The initiative aims to encourage young people and families to discover Ireland’s rich cultural and historical heritage, while helping to make these experiences more accessible by removing financial barriers. OPW heritage sites continue to play an important role as educational and cultural resources, offering visitors of all age’s opportunities to learn more about Ireland’s history, architecture and traditions.
Speaking about the initiative, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin “Boxer” Moran, said: “I am delighted that all under 18s will once again enjoy free entry to OPW heritage sites this August.
"Whether it’s exploring ancient monuments, visiting historic houses, taking part in interactive tours or discovering Ireland’s cultural heritage first-hand, this initiative offers young people a fun and memorable way to connect with history, nature and culture over the summer holidays.”
