Local pub marks special anniversary of world’s longest-running weekly quiz

Spell’s Bar in Ballaghaderreen is marking a special anniversary tonight (Tuesday) as its weekly quiz celebrates 42 years and lays claim to being the world’s longest-running weekly pub quiz.
The quiz at the Pound Street pub – which has become a quiz question itself - turns 42 years old this week.
Owner Neil Sheridan confirmed that the longest running weekly quiz in the world will be in party mood tonight "as the champagne bottles pop".
The Tuesday night pub quiz started in October 1984 at the pub, and has continued there on a weekly basis ever since.
Then operating as Spelman's under the ownership of Noel and Mae Spelman, the pub was sold to Neil in 2003.
As the venue developed a strong reputation for traditional music, the weekly Tuesday night quiz also continued uninterrupted.
More than four decades on, a number of the founding quiz members still take part regularly.
