More than 4,800 changes have been made to the county’s electoral register as part of a major clean-up operation ahead of migration to Voter.ie, the new national online voter registration system.
The extensive work carried out by Roscommon County Council included data cleansing, the removal of duplicate and deceased electors, and the standardisation of address and polling information.
The overhaul of the register resulted in 2,253 records being removed, 1,455 new electors being added and 1,133 voter records being updated before Roscommon migrated to Voter.ie in July as part of the national roll-out programme.
The county is one of 31 local authority registers being incorporated into a single national database.
Based on figures presented at a council meeting last year, there were 53,724 electors on the Roscommon register as of December 17th, 2024.
At this year’s July plenary meeting of the local authority, members were told that the new system is also linked to death registration data to help identify potential deceased electors.
However, all removals must still be verified by council staff.
Established under the Electoral Reform Act 2022, Voter.ie is designed to modernise electoral registration through online applications, stronger identity verification measures and the creation of a single national electoral register.
For years, electoral registers around the country have been dogged by complaints over duplicate and outdated records.
The move to a single national voter registration database is intended to improve accuracy and make it easier to identify discrepancies.
Last year, a national review of Ireland’s electoral registers found the county’s register to be among the most accurate in the country. Roscommon ranked second nationally for voter dates of birth recorded, fourth for combined date of birth and Eircode data, and tenth for Eircodes recorded.
The migration of the country’s electoral registers to Voter.ie marks the most significant reform of the system in many years.
