Midlands hotel closes due to gastroenteritis outbreak

Glasson Lakehouse, a four-star hotel located outside Athlone, has closed its doors temporarily following an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness among guests and visitors to the premises.
The HSE confirmed on Thursday that the Department of Public Health’s Dublin and Midlands team has been investigating the outbreak since Monday, August 24.
Public health officials are working alongside environmental health officers to determine the source of the illness, with a number of people reported to have become unwell after attending the hotel.
In a statement, the HSE said its public health team was working closely with HSE National Environmental Health Service colleagues and the premises to ensure all appropriate actions were being taken. This includes working to contact affected people with advice.
“Management and staff at the premises are cooperating fully with public health advice. The premises has voluntarily closed to facilitate outbreak control measures,” said the HSE.
Gastroenteritis is an infection of the stomach and bowel which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea.
