Keadue was abuzz with the lively strains of traditional Irish music as the O'Carolan Harp Festival and Summer School began  drew to a close last week. This iconic festival, commemorates the legacy of the legendary harper Turlough O'Carolan and draws artists, musicians, and enthusiasts from around the globe.

The festival started with a vibrant array of masterclass workshops. The official launch took place on the evening of July 29th at the magnificent Kilronan Castle, graced by Attracta Brady, President of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. The ceremony was followed by a heartfelt remembrance concert honoring Arthur Boyle, a beloved former committee member, and set the tone for a week of celebration through music, song, and storytelling.

Tuesday, July 30th, featured an exhilarating performance by the O’Carolan Country Céilí Band. Their lively tunes filled the hall with energy, inspiring everyone to dance and creating an electrifying atmosphere.

A highlight of the week was the magical harp recital held in the historic Kilronan Castle. Talented local harpers Fiachra Guihen, Emma Benson, and Sophie Daly, along with renowned musicians Jason McGuinness, Micheál Fitzgibbon, and Clodagh Daly, delivered a captivating performance, paying homage to O'Carolan's timeless compositions.

Thursday, August 1st, brought the much-anticipated Tutors Concert, a showcase of the finest in Irish traditional music, harp playing, song, and dance. Hosted by Senator Eugene Murphy, the event was a splendid display of talent and tradition.

The festivities continued with a lively céilí on Friday night in the newly refurbished St. Ronan’s Hall. The All-Ireland Champions, the Piper Cross Céilí Band, dazzled the audience, testing the hall's new floor with their dynamic performances and adding to the festival's electric atmosphere.

The weekend festivities kicked off with a 5km Fun Run/Walk organized by Keadue Tidy Towns, followed by a delightful Family Fun Day on Saturday, August 3rd, courtesy of the local sports field committee.

The prestigious International Harp Competition, sponsored by Arigna Fuels, took place on August 3rd, showcasing exceptional talent across all age groups. Oonagh Kelly won the Under 10 category, Brianna Kelly topped the 10-12 age group, Ria Adachi triumphed in the 12-15 category, Larissa Fleck won the 15-18 competition, and Eilish Needham clinched first place in the open competition. This event underscored the community's rich musical heritage and commitment to the arts.

Saturday evening brought laughter to St. Ronan's Hall with Niamh McGrath's play "GomBean," a hilarious portrayal of Grace O’Malley, a former wrestler turned coffee shop owner navigating life's ups and downs in a small town in Sligo.

The festival's excitement peaked on Sunday, August 4th, with a standout performance by the acclaimed traditional Irish music group, Seoid. Featuring Kenny Donagher, Kerrie Herrity, John Dwyer, and Keadue's own Fiachra Guihen.

The festivities continued with an electrifying performance by the legendary group Cherish the Ladies, headlining the festival's marquee concert. Led by the charismatic Joanie Madden, the ensemble featured the exceptional talents of Mirella Murray on accordion, Mary Coogan on guitar, Kathleen Boyle on piano, Nollaig Casey on fiddle, and vocalist Kate Purcell. They were joined by the dynamic Canadian Step Dance Champion Nathan Pilatzke. Their captivating performance had the audience on their feet, clamoring for encores.

The concluding bank holiday Monday began with a poignant wreath-laying ceremony at O’Carolan’s grave, followed by an enlightening lecture at the exquisite Kilronan Castle. This year, we had the privilege of hosting Professor Lillis Ó Laoire, who delivered an insightful talk titled "Place, Prayer and Power at the Holy Wells of Ireland," exploring the rich cultural and spiritual tapestry of the nation's heritage.

As the day unfolded, the festival’s energy returned to the GigRig, where the widely beloved David James and his band delivered a rousing open-air performance. Their lively songs and infectious spirit had everyone dancing and singing along, adding to the day's vibrant atmosphere.

The grand finale featured the much-anticipated Door Dancing Competition, a unique celebration of traditional Irish dance in all its forms. Senator Eugene Murphy served as the evening's compere, expertly guiding the audience through an exhilarating showcase of talent and passion. This unforgettable night of performances brought the festival to a fitting close, leaving attendees with cherished memories and a deep appreciation for the rich cultural traditions on display.
