Young Tom to sacrifice mullet to help friend Nicola
14-year-old Tom Glennon from St. Aidan's GAA Club and a student of Coláiste Mhuire, Ballygar is the proud owner of the "most famous mullet in Roscommon" and is raising funds by cutting it for a good friend, Nicola Brennan Murphy.
A young Roscommon teenager is set to have his prized mullet cut off in order to raise funds for his friend Nicola Brennan Murphy who has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
According to the gofundme page which has been set up with a target of €1,000 "Tom Glennon is 14 years old and is a member of the St. Aidan's GAA Club and a student of Coláiste Mhuire, Ballygar. Tom is also the proud owner of the most famous mullet in Roscommon and is raising funds by cutting it for a good friend, Nicola Brennan Murphy.
"Nicola is a daughter of Sean & Anne (Nee Hurley) Brennan from Ahsaragh and sister to Valerie Lynch and Lousie Brennan.
"Nicola was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in September 2023 aged 44. This devastating diagnosis was delivered just four years after Nicola fought cancer having successfully undergone chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery with unyielding positivity throughout.
"She was so looking forward to this new chapter in her life as her two sons started university, she was in remission and finally back in the job that she loved for the past 18 years when she began to lose power in her right arm. Concerned that the cancer had returned she underwent numerous scans and tests only to be told of a new unrelated diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease (MND/ALS)."
Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive neurological condition that attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord which means messages gradually stop reaching the muscles which leads to weakness and wasting. MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat and breathe. Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive disease for which there is no remission.
While MND can present in various ways, Nicola is currently experiencing weakness in both her arms and legs to the extent that she has no function in some of her limbs and evolving weakness in the remaining areas."
To date €425 has been raised with the hair cut due to take place at St. Aidan's GAA Pitch, Ballyforan, with the date and time to be confirmed. To donate search for 'Join Tom Glennon's Mullet Cut for Nicola' on gofundme.

Meanwhile a group of five friends have embarked on an ambitious challenge to kick points in all 32 counties of Ireland, visiting a different club pitch in each county.
The group of young men, including four members from the St Barry’s GAA club, Eoghan Diffley, Emmet Burke, Ciaran McManus, and Conor Murphy, along with Brian Kelly from the Newtown Cashel club in Longford, have decided to take on a challenge to support Conor's mother, Nicola.
The fundraiser will take place this weekend from Friday, May 10th to Sunday, May 12th over 32 hours of daylight. A gofundme page has also been set up and a percentage of all funds raised will go to a charity of Nicola’s choice.
