U-15 FOOTBALLERS: Northern Gaels played Athenry in Glinsk on May 20th. Despite having only 15 lads togged, it was a 15-a-side game. In the second half, Athenry scored some early goals to kill off the game and won the match comfortably. But great credit goes to the Northern Gaels lads. They put in a massive effort from the throw-in to the final whistle. It was a credit to this group of players that they never gave up against an Athenry team that, in reality, should be playing in a higher division. Thanks to Glinsk GAA Club for the use of the pitch and facilities and thanks also to the Glinks lads for pushing back their training session to allow the game to go ahead. At the end of extra time, the teams were tied again, 1-13 to 2-10. Next up were 25-metre free kicks, which, once again, ended in a tie with each team scoring three out of five. In sudden death, St. Dominic’s were the first to miss. St. Croan’s converted their final free kick to put them into the last four. This result means that both the Division Two and Division Five adult ladies’ teams have qualified for the semi-finals in four weeks’ time.

FOOTBALL COMMITTEE: The monthly meeting takes place this Thursday, May 29th, in the meeting room at 8 p.m..

LGFA NEWS: The Roscommon Leisure Zone sponsored junior ladies’ footballers played St. Croan’s in their league quarter-final in Enfield on Saturday. When the sides met earlier in the year, St. Dominic’s didn’t have a good day. However, this was a much tighter affair. The sides couldn’t be separated after normal time or extra time, which meant the game was decided by 25-metre kicks. Both sides converted three out of their five kicks, so sudden death was needed where, unfortunately, St. Dominic’s just came up short. Overall, there was nothing between the teams. Well done to the St. Dominic’s girls who never gave up and played a great 80 minutes of football. The team will now focus their attention on the championship later this summer. Meanwhile, the Roscommon Leisure Zone sponsored senior ladies footballers played Clann na nGael in their quarter-final on Sunday. The girls have to give second best and will now face a relegation play-off on Sunday, June 22nd, when they travel to Kilbride.

HURLING: Hard luck to the Roscommon minor hurlers on their Celtic Challenge semi-final defeat against Laois on Saturday. Well done to the three St. Dominic’s players involved — Jack Keane, Jack Kelly, and Thomas Hanley — on a fantastic year of hurling. A special mention to Prionsias Killion and Ollie Hanley for coaching these lads and doing the club proud. Congratulations to the U-12 hurlers who had a fantastic win in Athleague on Sunday, May 25th. They played Athleague/Tremane in a league game where they produced an excellent performance from start to finish. It is fantastic to see the improvements these players are making on a weekly basis.
