The Federation of Irish Sport has revealed County Roscommon’s 2024 recipient of the Volunteers in Sport Awards.

Tony Christie, Ballinameen GAA Club, will be honoured at a special awards ceremony on Friday, February 28th, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown, alongside a volunteer from every county in Ireland in recognition of their dedication and passion for their local club.

Tony has left a legacy of service to his local GAA club in North Roscommon. His dedication to Roscommon GAA spans over a decade, during which time he has served as chairperson of the Club Committee and coached teams from U-6s to junior men’s in Ballinameen.

Under Tony’s leadership, Ballinameen won the Roscommon Junior A Football Championship in 2019 — a testament to his coaching and strategic vision.

Tony has played an instrumental role in developing the club’s facilities, including a new dressing room and ensuring accessibility for all around Davonna Park.

His tireless efforts to secure funding, including grants and sponsorships, have supported the club’s ongoing development. His inclusivity and commitment have also made him a beloved figure in his community.

Throughout November and December 2024, the Federation of Irish Sport called on the public, sports clubs, Local Sports Partnerships and Governing Bodies to nominate volunteers whose contributions have made a meaningful difference.

This 2024 awards saw a record number of nominations from over 53 sporting disciplines, reflecting the incredible diversity of volunteering in Ireland.
