St. Dominic’s and Clann na nGael will meet in another county senior ladies’ football championship semi-final after both teams came through their respective quarter-finals on Sunday afternoon.
St. Dominic’s produced their best display of the season to see off last year’s intermediate champions, St. Ciaran's, by 1-14 to 2-5 at Mulhern Park, Fuerty.
Aimee O’Connor and Aoife Gavin hit 1-10 between them, while Áine O’Meara was superb in defence for the winners.
Trailing by 0-6 to 0-4 at half time, Ciaran’s received a tonic at the start of the second half when Hanora Brennan found the net.
St. Dominic’s re-established their superiority through points from Aimee O’Connor, Sarah Jane O’Connor, Aoife Gavin and Kaitlin Egan, but a second St. Ciaran’s goal in the 42nd minute from Rachel Fitzmaurice threw Jonathan Conroy’s side another lifeline.
But they couldn’t make the most of it, and Aoife Gavin’s 60th minute goal was the key score in delivering a six-point success that was thoroughly deserved.
At Johnstown, defending champions Clann na nGael laboured to a 3-6 to 0-5 win against Shannon Gaels.
Shauna Bannon’s first-half goal handed her side a 1-3 to 0-2 half-time lead, and early goals in the second half from Kara Earle and Hope Glynn put Clann, who kicked ten wides, out of reach.
The Boyle v Éire Óg game was postponed as a mark of respect to the late Adrian Brogan. That game will be played next Sunday in Abbey Park, with the winner facing St. Brigid’s in the other semi-final.
