Another tranche of experience has been removed from the Roscommon senior footballers with confirmation on Friday evening that Pádraig Pearses defender, Niall Daly, has announced his intercounty retirement.
Over an “exceptional career”, Daly made his senior championship debut in 2011 against Tyrone in an All-Ireland Qualifier in Croke Park, marking the beginning of a distinguished intercounty journey that has spanned over a decade.
He made 149 appearances for Roscommon, scoring 2-52, and established himself as one of the county’s most consistent and influential performers.
Roscommon GAA described Daly as “a natural leader both on and off the pitch”, adding that his “professionalism, commitment, and resilience earned him immense respect within the dressing room and among supporters across the county.”
Roscommon GAA also highlighted that his contribution to Roscommon football had been “immense”, and that he was leaving behind a legacy of excellence and integrity.
“On behalf of everyone in Roscommon GAA, I want to extend our deepest thanks to Niall for the remarkable dedication, loyalty, and passion he has shown throughout his time representing the county.
“He has played a key role in countless special moments on the field, and his influence extended far beyond match days. His presence will be genuinely missed by his team-mates and supporters right across Roscommon. We wish Niall, Martha, Rory and Billy the very best of luck in the future,” said Roscommon GAA Chairperson, Brian Carroll.
Announcing his retirement, Daly paid tribute to his club Pádraig Pearses for everything they had done for him throughout the years. He also expressed his appreciation to supporters across the County Roscommon for the “incredible encouragement and backing” he received during his time in a Roscommon jersey.
“I am also deeply grateful to my family for their constant support — my Mam and Dad, and especially my wife Martha, who has been by my side every step of the way. Of course, a special mention goes to my two biggest fans, Rory and Billy.
“I have been fortunate to play alongside some brilliant players over the years, and I now look forward to supporting the boys from the stands.
“I would like to wish Mark (Dowd), his management team, and all the lads the very best for the year ahead,” concluded Daly.
Roscommon GAA thanked Daly, who missed most of last season through injury, for his outstanding service and wished him and his family every success in the years to come.
