Roscommon have lost another experienced figurehead in the dressing room as David Murray has announced his retirement from inter county football.
The Pádraig Pearses clubman won Connacht titles at minor, U-21 and senior in a proud and distinguished career.
Murray made his senior inter county debut against Cavan in 2015 having previously enjoyed success at underage level where he helped Roscommon secure a Connacht Minor Football Championship title and two Connacht Under-21 Football Championship titles, captaining the side in 2014.
Among the highlights of his senior career were Roscommon’s Connacht Senior Football Championship triumphs in 2017 and 2019, campaigns in which he played a key role along with four National Football League Division 2 titles (2015, 2018, 2020, 2022) and a National Football League Division 3 title (2014).
Murray was a model of consistency and commitment throughout his time with Roscommon, earning widespread respect for his reliability, work rate and leadership, particularly in the defensive line.
Over the course of his career, he became a mainstay of the senior panel, making 125 appearances and representing his county across multiple National League and Championship campaigns.
Roscommon GAA described Murray as a leader who never sought the headlines during a decorated inter county career: “Never one to seek the spotlight, Murray’s contribution was defined by discipline, resilience and an unwavering dedication to the Roscommon cause. His longevity at the top level is a testament to his professionalism and passion for the game.
“As he steps away from inter-county football, David Murray leaves behind a legacy of service and pride that will be fondly remembered by teammates, management and supporters alike. He now turns his focus to the next phase in his life, with Roscommon GAA wishing him every success in the years ahead."
Roscommon GAA Chairperson, Tom Murray said: “On behalf of Roscommon GAA, we sincerely thank David for his exceptional commitment to football in Roscommon on the field as a player and off it as one of our greatest ambassadors. While David’s inter-county career has now come to an end, his legacy will remain and I know that he will continue to play an important role within his club and community.
“We wish David, his partner Sinead and their son Tom all the very best for the next chapter in their lives.”
