Cloonfad United make light of inclement weather to prevail

Amelia Bury, Lanesboro NS, receives her Player of the Tournament award from Ms Hazel Hannon, Lanesboro Community College Principal, following the recent five-a-side tournament for local national schools organised by Ballyboro FC.

The bad weather last weekend caused major disruption to the Roscommon and District League fixtures list where there were only a handful of games played.

In the Division One Northern section, Cloonfad United gave themselves a real chance of promotion to Division One proper when they thrashed Kilkerrin United 7-1 in very poor conditions at Cloonfad.

Despite the inclement weather, the players battled on, and while Cloonfad United were comfortable winners, it was only in the second half that they gained control.

Seán Burke and James Brennan scored two goals each, and Daithí Gannon, Luke Ruane and Darragh Flynn added one each. Damien Mahon headed a goal for Kilkerrin United to make it 2-1 after 39 minutes.

While Cloonfad United lead Glen Celtic by a single point, Glen Celtic have a game less played.

In Division One South, St. John’s Athletic beat Moylough ‘79 4-0 at Lecarrow. Jamie Tiernan gave the winners a 2-0 lead at half time. MJ O’Connor added a third goal before Tiernan completed his hat-trick.

St. John’s Athletic, Skyvalley Rovers and Moylough ‘79 are promoted to Division One proper. Cam Celtic/Dysart are in the play-off for seventh place in the newly-formed division.

In the only game played in the Women’s League, Cam Celtic beat a very young St. Cuan’s/Ahascragh United side 7-0 at a wind and rain-swept Ahascragh. Sarah O’Rourke scored three goals, Lucy Sheffield grabbed two, and Aoife Coyle and Katie McDonnell added one each for the winners.
