Dreams realised at Community Games indoor soccer finals in Strokestown

The U-13 boys' team from Strokestown alongside their management of Paul Gibbons and John McDermott that were crowned Community Games indoor soccer champions in Strokestown.
Fourteen teams converged on Strokestown Community Centre on Sunday, March 2nd, for the semi-finals and finals of the Roscommon Community Games indoor soccer competitions.
Teams from Strokestown, Kiltoom/Cam, Taughmaconnell, Drum/Clonown, Elphin, Knockcroghery/St. John’s and Kilbride made it to “finals day” in the hope of securing their place at the Connacht finals on April 26th in County Galway.
The U-10 girls had played their semi-finals the previous weekend where teams from Strokestown and Kiltoom/Cam recorded victories against Taughmaconnell and Ballaghaderreen.
It was a big boost for these girls to be taking part in the competition for the first time, and Kiltoom/Cam enjoyed the added bonus of silverware with a 4-0 victory in the final.
Drum/Clonown booked their place in the final of the U-10 boys’ competition with a 3-0 victory against neighbours Taughmaconnell in their semi-final.
In the other semi-final, Elphin needed extra-time to overcome Kiltoom/Cam 3-0.
That 3-0 scoreline was replicated once more in the final when a talented Drum/Clonown team cemented their place in the provincial finals.
Eleven teams competed in the U-13 girls’ age group. The semi-finals saw Taughmaconnell beat Elphin 4-0 and Knockcroghery/St. John’s edge out Drum/Clonown 3-2.
The final resulted in county final bliss for Taughmaconnell on a 4-2 scoreline.
The U-13 boys’ competition was whittled down from ten teams to semi-finalists Kilbride, Drum/Clonown, Strokestown and Elphin.
Kilbride beat Drum/Clonown 1-0, while Strokestown recorded a straightforward 6-1 success against Elphin. In the final, Strokestown prevailed 6-2.
The winning teams were presented with shields and gold medals. Silver medals were presented to the runners-up.
Well done to all the teams that competed in the competitions and a big thank you to their managers and coaches. Without them, the competition could not be held.
Roscommon Community Games also thanks the parents and siblings that supported them throughout the event.
Congratulations to the teams from Kiltoom/Cam, Drum/Clonown, Taughmaconnell and Strokestown that will represent Roscommon at the Connacht finals on April 26th in Tuam.
The executive committee would like to thank Strokestown Community Games for hosting the event and to the committee of the Strokestown Community Centre for providing their excellent premises.
