Five-star Castlerea Celtic advance in Connacht Cup

The Castlerea Celtic squad that enjoyed a good day at the office against Kilglass/Enniscrone in the Connacht Cup on Sunday last.

There were some good results for Roscommon and District League teams in the second round of the Connacht Cup and Shield competitions last weekend.

Castlerea Celtic recorded an impressive 5-0 win over Sligo outfit, Kilglass/Enniscrone, at Castlerea. Jay McCartney opened the scoring in the fifth minute after being set up by Kailin Barlow. McCartney returned the favour after the break when he provided the passes for Barlow to score two more. Seán Óg Bergin and Oisín O’Farrell added one each before the end.

Ballinahown FC beat fellow RDFL Division One side Moylough ’79, 4-1, at Moylough. Oisín O’Reilly opened the scoring for the winners in the ninth minute. Shane Allen added another ten minutes later.

Seán Kelly pulled one back for Moylough on the half hour mark but Luke Kelly and Ciarán O’Reilly added two more for the winners.

Skyvalley Rovers failed to advance when they were beaten at home by Galway Premier side Maree/Oranmore. The visitors scored after ten minutes but the home side rallied. They had the ball in the Maree/Oranmore net twice in the first half but the goals were chalked off.

Skyvalley Rovers scored a well-deserved equaliser after 59 minutes when a good pass from Eoin Keogh reached Emmett Kelly who found the net. Both teams came close to scoring but, in the second minute of injury-time, the visitors won a corner kick and Shane Cox got a vital touch in a crowded six-yard box to score the winner.

Premier Division side Moore United recorded a hard-earned but impressive 5-4 win over Sligo outfit Calry Bohs after extra time. Josh Lennon scored two and Charles Nevin added one in normal time. Seán Fortune and Charles Nevin grabbed two more goals in extra-time to seal Moore’s place in the third round.

Boyle Celtic were unlucky to be beaten 3-2 after extra-time away to Ballina-based outfit, Conn Rangers. Michael Corrigan converted a penalty kick to give Boyle Celtic a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. The home side score twice before Corrigan added his second to send the game to extra-time. Unfortunately, for the visitors, Eoin Prendergast scored Conn Rangers’ winner in the second period of extra-time.

In the Connacht Shield, Cloonfad United recorded a good 4-3 win over Mayo side Swinford at Cloonfad. Swinford took the lead after 13 minutes, but Conor Flynn levelled the game in the 28th minute.

Aidan Sloyan gave the home side a 2-1 lead at the interval but Swinford were level ten minutes into the second half. Shane O’Malley restored Cloonfad’s lead within seconds and David Hennessy made it 4-2. Swinford grabbed their third goal two minutes from the end of the game.

A young Glen Celtic side were beaten 5-2 away to Colga FC. The Glenamaddy-based side were in contention for most of the game thanks to two goals from Gavin Hegarty, but Colga scored a couple of late goals to seal the victory.

Moyne Villa defeated Moore United’s second side 5-3 at Headford. The game between Ballaghaderreen and Ballisodare was abandoned when their goalkeeper suffered a serious leg injury. Ballaghaderreen were leading 3-2 at the time with about five minutes remaining.

St. John’s Athletic B were beaten 2-1 away to Galway Hibs. Derek Doyle scored their goal.

Division Two outfit, Lough Harps, recorded a good 2-0 win over Corrib Celtic at Ballinlough. Tiernan Murphy gave them a 1-0 lead after 28 minutes before David Frayne added a second goal with 22 minutes remaining.

Carrick Town drew 2-2 against Tuam side, Dynamo Blues, at Carrick-on-Shannon but they were eventually beaten following a penalty shootout.

In the only game in the Premier Division, St. John’s Athletic came from behind to beat Shiven Rovers 3-2 at Lecarrow. Stephen Francis gave the home side a 1-0 lead at half time but Stephen Murray and Seamus O’Kelly propelled Shiven Rovers ahead early in the second half. Cian Kelly and Daire Keenan scored for the home side, who took the three valuable points.

In the Women’s League a powerful and experienced Dunmore Town side beat Roscommon United, who are playing their first season in the league, at Dunmore. Aoife Smyth scored five, Ashling Hynes and Lily Concannon scored two each, and Amy Burns, Siobhan O’Grady and Sarah Cosgrove added one each for the winners.

Boyle Celtic defeated Kilkerrin United 2-0 at Boyle. Emma Duggan and Sinead O’Donohoe scored their goals.

Ballaghaderreen FC beat Carrick Town 8-0 in a game played on the astro turf in Gurteen. Jessica Feeney scored two, and Amy Downey, Grace McDermott and Robyn Ní Tuathaig added one each in the first half. Rebecca Finan added two more after the break before Jessica Feeney completed the scoring for the winners.

Dunmore Town, Ballaghaderreen and Boyle Celtic are in the title race conversation, with Castlerea Celtic, who won the points from their game with Shiven Rovers, still in with a chance of catching the leaders.
