Local secondary school on glory trail once more

A local secondary school is setting its sights on further national glory after winning its semi-final earlier this week.

Glenamaddy Community School defeated St. Aidan’s Comprehensive School, Cootehill, 2-0, at Longford Town FC to reach the final of the FAI Schools’ First Year ‘B’ Girls’ National Cup (U-14, small schools).

The East Galway school started the clash without the influential Ruby McGuire who sustained a knee injury but was bolstered by the fact that six of the starting 11 were involved with the Minor B squad that captured the national title back in May.

The winners took the lead after six minutes when Edie Kilmartin slipped the ball past St. Aidan’s goalkeeper, Hannah Sherlock.

Seven minutes later, they doubled their advantage as Charlotte Collins connected superbly with a Michelle Mulryan free kick to make it 2-0.

Midway through the first half, St. Aidan’s had a brilliant chance to grab one back as Grace Sherlock’s effort hit the woodwork with a well-executed set piece from 25 yards out.

But John Kennedy’s side maintained their two-goal cushion at the interval.

It was an even game in the second period with Charlotte Collins having a great opportunity to extend the Glenamaddy lead but her effort came agonisingly off the crossbar on 36 minutes.

St. Aidan’s had a goal ruled for offside in the dying minutes of the game as Glenamaddy did enough to see them advance to the FAI Schools First Year B Girls’ National Cup final.

Glenamaddy will meet either Coláiste Éamann Ris, Cork City (Deerpark CBS) or Ramsgrange Community School in the final on Wednesday, September 25th.
